The Art of Purposeful Storytelling

If anyone should be lecturing on storytelling, it’s Chairman and CEO of Mandalay Entertainment, Peter Guber. His business is storytelling. Throughout his career, he has produced some of the world’s most well known movies, including Rain Man, Batman, The Color Purple, and more. He has also been the head of Sony Pictures, PolyGram, and Columbia Pictures.

Guber says we tell stories everyday. When we tell our friends where to eat or what movie to see, we are translating our emotional experience to another. But, purposeful storytelling takes it a step further by listening to the audience, engaging them, and letting them take ownership of your experience.

One of the best points Guber makes is that you should not try and be interesting to your audience, but rather be interested in them. When you are storytelling, you are in the emotional transportation business, and an authentic dialogue is vital to this transfer.
