Don’t Blame Media for Troubled Youths

With many problems in today’s society — for example, violence, teen pregnancy, and obesity — media is constantly deemed the culprit. But Karen Sternheimer says our problems are much more complex than that. One commonality has been found among all these problems: poverty.

Karen Sternheimer is a sociologist at USC. Her focus is on mass media, children and popular culture. Her book is entitled, Connecting Social Problems with Popular Culture: Why Media Is Not the Answer.

“Popular culture is an easy answer for many of society’s problems, but it is almost always the wrong answer,” she says.
